Hawaii Coral Reef Ecology
Ages 12-14
JULY 12th-JULY 26th
Hawaii's explosive start 25 million years ago created a chain of islands, shoals and reefs unlike any other in the world. Its diverse ecosystems and unique underwater kingdom all stem from an incredible geologic history. Also affected by geographic isolation, the Hawaiian Islands have given rise to their own culture, language and environment.
This summer you will spend 15 days diving, hiking, kayaking, sailing, surfing, doing marine research, and exploring the islands of Maui and Lanai.
Research
For one of our projects we have teamed up with Reef Check Hawaii and Hawaiian Rafting Adventures in an effort to monitor Hawaiian reef systems. The Island of Lanai has some of the most spectacular diving in Hawaii including world renowned locations like First Cathedrals and Double Arches. However, at the moment there is very little data on the current health of these amazing reefs. It is of vital importance to all of us that a baseline be established on Lanai while it is still healthy so that we can monitor any impact in the future. During our trip students will learn and use Reef Check protocol to help monitor Lanai's reefs and establish this baseline.
